We’re under it every day and yet most of us are oblivious to it. We’re talking about the showerhead. It’s the fixture that rarely gets any attention unless it’s broken. And that’s a shame because showerheads can do a lot more than rinse: they can reinvigorate your morning routine. Many showerheads today have multiple settings that allow you to adjust the flow pattern for a customized bathing experience.
Showerheads manufactured after 1992 were required to limit flow rates to 2.5 gallons per minute or less to comply with the Department of Energy. This not only saves water — showerheads before the policy used more than 5 gallons gpm — but it also reduces your water heater’s energy consumption.
It’s impressive what showerheads can do with only 2.5 gpm. If you want to soothe a sore back, feel as though you’re under a cascading waterfall or simply need extra pressure to wash off dirt and grease, chances are there’s a setting for that.
Here’s what they are and when to use them:
Power spray: A powerful, invigorating blast that’s best for rinsing soap out of thick hair.
Wide stream: Likely the default setting, this feature maximizes coverage for an all-over flow.
Message: Uses micro-jets in the center of the head for a concentrated, high-pressure wash that relieves sore muscles.
Mist: Fine droplets that make you feel like you’re in a rainforest. Switch to the mist setting when you want to build up a thick lather or shave.
Flood: A barrage of water. Reserve this setting for scrubbing up after a mud run and stick around for a stress-relieving sensation.
Bottom line: Some luxury showerheads have a dozen settings so that you can dial in the perfect pressure and patten, while many mid-tier fixtures typically offer at least several options to change up your daily scrub-down.
