Water damage from washing machines are one of the number one causes for home insurance claims. When the unit itself starts leaking, most people automatically assume that the entire machine needs replacement. But more than half of the time, the hoses on the back of the unit are actually the problem. When a hose breaks, it can easily cause an expensive and disastrous mess. The water pressure going through these hoses are so strong, that when a single hose bursts, 650 gallons of water an hour can pour out continually until the water is shut off. Therefore, the average claim for that happening costs over $6,000!
Age: Over time, everything breaks down and loses the strength it had at first. Studies show that normal wear and tear will cause breaks in washing machine hoses that are over 5 years old.
Materials: Hoses are made from reinforced rubber which loses resilience over time. When this happens, they are subject to cracks, leaks, and bursting.
Installation Errors: The most common installation error is failure to leave sufficient room for the washing machine hoses. This can cause kinks in the hose, particularly near the valve connections.
Inspect the hoses on the back of your washing machine once a month to make sure that everything is in proper working order. Inspect both hot and cold water lines and their connections. Look for signs of deterioration such as blisters, bulges, or bubbles; cracks, unraveling, discoloration, or kinks – Especially near the connections. Make sure it’s also free of any moisture, drips, rust, and leaks.
If you notice that any these symptoms are affecting your washing machine hoses, replace them immediately. These warning signs show deterioration and a weak state, which means they could break at any given moment. Deterioration can also occur inside the hose so that it’s not visible during these inspections. Either way, hoses should be replaced every 3-5 years.
Opt for an upgraded washing machine hose that’s reinforced with braided nylon or polyester mesh to increase strength. Leave at least 4 inches of space between the washing machine and the wall to minimize kinking. Ensure that the valve connections are securely fastened. Be attentive by trying to use the washing machine only when someone is home. Studies show that when washer failures happened when someone was not home, it resulted in 150% greater loss!
